Thank you to everyone who attended the Silver Falls 'Rhythms & Manifesting' retreat last weekend- I hope your experience was as fantastic and moving as mine was!

This evening I am playing in the Seattle area, and then it is off to Puerto Rico! My destination is the town of Loiza, where I will check out La Fiesta de Santiago Apostol and hope to find a teacher willing to give me a few Bomba & Plena drumming lessons. I will fill you all in on the details when I get back. Hasta luego!

It's Christmas in July . . .
posted July 5, 2008-

. . . and I am continually presented with the gift of working with many truly amazing people! July is going to be a busy, busy, BUSY month! It consists of (in addition to my usual private lesson roster, working on two or three drum instructional book projects, and other regular gigs) a show with the Willamette Valley Saxophone Quartet (love playing drumset with these guys); a completely improvised duo performance with guitarist/electronic looper/Willamette University professor Mike Nord; teaching a 'Sights & Sounds of Ghana' percussion & culture workshop; a few RockStarLive "live-band karaoke" gigs around Portland and Seattle; co-facilitating a 'Rhythms & Manifesting' overnight retreat with life coach Hollee Haas at the beautiful Silver Falls Conference Center (click on the banner above); playing two separate opening slots for country stars Craig Morgan (on the 17th) and Sawyer Brown (on the 30th); finishing a four-article series for Modern Drummer Magazine (I'll keep you posted!); AND somehow finding a few days to slip away to Puerto Rico to try to find some local drummers, get a few Bomba & Plena drum lessons and attend La Fiesta de Santiago Apostol!

You may have noticed the new email newsletter opt-in box at the top of this page. If you would like to stay informed about my future group programs, hand drum classes, live performances and/or book, article, audio & video releases, enter in your email address. I will be sure to keep you updated! And hey . . . drop me a line on the Guestbook while you're here. Hope to see you you soon!

I am very excited to announce that I have a new program coming up on July 19th & 20th! Hollee Haas (International life coach, speaker and intuitive) and I have teamed up to create a powerful personal development retreat, 'Unlock Your Inner Rhythms & Manifest Your Desires.' The retreat will be held at Silver Falls Conference Center, a half-mile from Oregon's beautiful Silver Falls State Park. Seminars and hands-on workshops will guide participants through the process of becoming aware of the rhythms that surround us: ever-present in our bodies, environment, work and relationships. Learning how to harness that power allows us to gain control of our lives and turn all of our desires into reality.

Book, videos, articles . . .
posted May 29, 2008-

My great friend and teacher Dave Stanoch just released "Mastering the Tables of Time: Volume One," a fantastic drumset method to improve your groove, coordination, polyrhythmic and soloing skills! My work on the project included the music typesetting and editing. I highly recommend the book for players of all experience levels. Along with the hardcopy of the book, Dave is offering loads of free online audio/video 'companion' materials, including additional 'web exclusive' pages and examples of him performing exercises from the book. Check it all out here, get a copy and get practicing!

There have been several new videos added to my Audio/Video page . . . a djembe/marimba duet with Yamaha Performing Artist Nathan Daughtrey; all four movements of "Diffusion," by Gordon Goodwin (with the Willamette Valley Saxophone Quartet); and a concurrent world premiere performance (with Randy Kem) of "The Miraculous Tale" (for alto sax & derabucca), by Egyptian composer Halim El-Dabh.

Also in the works is a short series of drumset articles for Modern Drummer Magazine. I'll keep you posted!

Mid-valley music . . . play it LOUD!

I contributed percussion tracks to two songs that are featured on the new local music sampler "STEREO SALEM." The collection was compiled and released by The Salem Soundwave (a joint venture between The Culture Shock Community Project and Radio Free Salem). I perform drumset on the song "She Brushed Up," by LeNUNES, and tabla on the Martyrs of Sound track "Ong Namo." The 2-CD set costs only $9 (!) and is available at Ranch Records, The Ike Box and The Willamette University Bookstore. Check out The Salem Soundwave website for more information and/or to order online. Because you ARE going to pick up a copy and support local music . . . right?!?

I am excited to catch up with some great friends and am meeting a bunch of my old students for a group drummer hang! Then it's back to Oregon for a busy rest of the month, including recording drum tracks for two album projects and facilitating a 'Rhythms at Work' teambuilding presentation (with 100+ participants drumming away!) as the closing session at the Oregon Alliance of Senior & Health Services annual conference.

#1: Check out Michael Vallee's new album, "Stay On Track." I play on three tracks!

#2: Keep Saturday, April 5th open on your calendar, and plan on coming to watch & hear an afternoon of drumming at my 2008 Student Recital! Beginning at 3pm (in the Bach Room at Weathers Music- Salem), we will have 25-30 percussionists performing short solos on drumset, snare drum, multi-percussion and djembe. Swing by, show your support, and be prepared to be impressed- they're sounding great!

Upcoming CD and book releases
posted February 27, 2008-

Drumset and percussion tracks were recently completed on LeNUNES' forthcoming album, "Sunshine and Sadness." The group consists of vocals, two electric bass guitars (fretted and fretless), and some piano. I had an absolute blast immersing myself in their music (and the fantastic breakfasts were an added bonus)! Catch the CD release show at The Blue Pepper (Salem, OR) on March 22nd and nab a copy for yourself!

I also just finished the music typesetting and editing work on the first volume of a tremendous drum instructional series, written by a great friend of mine. The project has been sent to the printer- we're awaiting a copy to proof. More details soon! All I can say is: watch out drummers, this stuff will take some practice!

Aside from the usual teaching and gigs, the next month will also be bringing more recording, two Career Day presentations at South Salem High School, a possible short Texas tour (stay tuned), much jogging (Shamrock Run- Portland; yeah, baby!) and, get this . . . classical fencing classes! That's right- for two hours every week, I'll be trading my drumsticks for a sword . . . look out!

'Tis the season to be . . . busy!
posted December 19, 2007-

As the end of the year quickly approaches, I have been frantically preparing for a number of upcoming projects. New Years Eve brings with it my first performance with disco tribute band The Afrodisiacs. You guessed it- that means me in a wig, bellbottoms, bling and platform shoes! Oh, yeah . . . and dancing The Hustle!

After the 1st, I'll have a few days to catch up with family in the Midwest, and then it's off to a five-day 'Junk Jam' percussion residency at Gibraltar School in Door County, Wisconsin. The week will also include a Thursday evening community rhythm workshop/performance, showcasing a variety of solo percussion and an ensemble [that we will create that week] of Gibraltar students.

On January 19th, I have the privilege of performing at the WVSE Saxophone Day 2008 evening concert, with Randy & Hijirah Kem, the Willamette Valley Saxophone Quartet, and other guest musicians. The concert will be held at the Mary Stewart Rogers Music Center, on the campus of Willamette University (Salem, OR) and will feature six saxophones + rhythm section on Miles Davis' "Birth of the Cool," three movements from selected Bob Mintzer compositions and new original material.

The end of the month, I'll be tracking drumset and percussion for an upcoming album by one of my favorite new bands: LeNUNES. They have a beautiful blend of vocals, piano and [two!] bass guitars, and are seriously some of the nicest people I've ever met! Their music allows me to be very textural (and pull out a lot of my obscure percussion toys)! Watch for it- the release date is March 2008.

Whew . . . time to get back to learning all of these tunes! Happy Holidays!

I'm excited about a performance I'm involved with this coming Thursday (the 29th), at Willamette University. The concert will feature guest saxophonist Joseph Wytko playing Ibert's "Concertino de Camera," one of the most famous original works written for saxophone in the 20th century.

I will be performing on two selections. The first is the West Coast Concurrent World Premier of "The Miraculous Tale," a duet for alto sax and derabucca, by Egyptian composer Halim El-Dabh. The saxophonist is Professor Randy Kem, who co-commissioned the piece. Following that, I will be providing drumset accompaniment to the Willamette Valley Saxophone Quartet on Gordon Goodwin's "Diffusions."

The FREE concert begins at 8pm in Hudson Hall. Hope to see you there!

Just returned from a fantastic week of programs in Wisconsin . . . many thanks to Benjamin Cloyd, Dave Williams, Mike Underwood, Marlo Ambas, Jonathan Leahy, Robin Cardell, Dane Richeson, Tracie Reuther-McWilliams, Rich Norenberg, Dave Jerabek, Valarie Meidinger, Brian Lydeen, Alice Toepel and Janice Mashak for making it all possible!

On a much sadder note, while home I was informed of the passing of my friend John Ruka, who took his own life last month. That route is never the solution to anyone's problems, but I'm especially surprised that it was the choice that John made. I've always thought of myself as professional, motivated and productive- but he continuously made everything I was doing look like a joke! I got to know him through the Drum Instructors' Guild, a networking organization that he founded and operated out of Milwaukee, WI. He also taught percussion at Wisconsin Lutheran College and thousands of private students, including Ernie Adams (Al Di Meola) and Eric Blaufuss (World Rudimental Snare Champion). I cherish the wisdom & inspiration that John shared with me, and send my love and support to his wife, Annette.

The schedule includes playing a jazz gig with old friends, and presenting percussion programs at Southern Oaks Girls School, the Wisconsin Resource Center, Winneconne High School, Marian College and the fall conference for the Wisconsin Association of Homes & Services for the Aging. That last one is certainly going to be a highlight- I have a few hundred pairs of drumsticks waiting in the Fox Valley, to be used by the expected 450 participants of the WAHSA session! Also, keep your eyes and ears open for the June release of "Mantra Chill," the latest CD by Martyrs of Sound. I had previously contributed percussion parts to two songs and just got word that the final product will be in-hand any day now. I'll keep you posted on the other releases right here, so check back!

It's practice time for me!
posted February 21, 2007-

Just returned from a fantastic trip to Boston, where I spent the weekend studying with some amazing cats! On Friday night, I took a three-hour drumset lesson with Rakalam Bob Moses. Rakalam ("the inaudible sound of the invisible sun") shared several of his musical concepts with me, including methods of committing to (and fully developing) a very small rhythm or motif; his ideas of 'living music' and 'contouring' the music that we hear; and his thoughts on making a groove "squinchable." I had two lessons on Sunday- the first with percussionist Jerry Leake. We focused on Indian tabla techniques and then moved into West African music, where Jerry introduced me to some gun-gon rhythms from the Dagomba people of northern Ghana. After that lesson, I headed to Cambridge and met with Takaaki Masuko, who taught me the strokes and some basic rhythms common to the Egyptian derabucca. I am indebted to Rakalam, Jerry and Taki for taking the time to share so much with me. I have my work cut out for me! Thanks again and again to Megan & Rachel Searcy, Jim & Deb Cloyd, Ken Radnofsky, as well as Jeff, Chris and the gang at Wentworth, for their generosity and helping to make the trip fun and, for that matter, possible! Now, if you don't mind, I have some serious practicing to do!

I also owe a pile of gratitude to Benjamin Cloyd, Rick Maki, Robin Cardell, Dane Richeson at Lawrence University, Dave Jerabek, the Jazz Orgy and the Guitar Center of Appleton (for coming through in a pinch). The week wouldn't have been remotely possible without everyone's interest, help and on-going support.
It is, however, good to be settling back into things here in Oregon. September has been a month of traveling- meaning little time at home. No April Fools joke

I'm here! Many thanks to my good friend Benjamin Cloyd for, at the last minute, offering to come along for the drive and help unload on this end. After a 65-hour journey through 8 states, with a 120lb. Great Pyrenees between us in the cab, and one minor truck breakdown, we made it! Now I'm off to unpack all of these totes!

Thanks a million to Robin, Chris, Dan, Tyler, Sam, Jake W., Jake H., Sawyer, Garrett, Mitchell, Gretchen, Jim, Trevor, John, Jarred, Aimee (& friend) and Ricky [hopefully I didn't miss anybody] for showing up and helping to load the 24' truck! You saved me literally DAYS worth of work. The studio and apartment were emptied in just a few hours! When I look into the back of the truck, see the motorcycle nestled between the two tympani, in front of stack after stack of 'drums & stuff,' I really appreciate the amount of work you all put in. (And I realize how little I'm going to enjoy unloading it all when I get to Oregon!) Thanks again to everybody. And by the way, Robin Cardell gets the MVP Award. I guess running all of those drum circles has really honed his packing skills!

Movin' west . . .
posted March 10, 2006-

This is my last month in Wisconsin. I have decided to relocate to Salem, a town just south of Portland, Oregon. Oshkosh has been very kind to me over the last six years and I am going to miss my family, as well as all of the students, bandmates and friends that I have gotten to know here. On the other hand, I am also looking forward to a change of scenery and the challenge of developing things in a new area. Beginning the first week of April, I will be teaching private lessons at Weathers Music in Salem. This site, my email address and- for a while- phone number will remain the same. Thank you to all of the students who have stuck it out for so long; thanks to all of the musicians who have put up with my shenanigans; and thank you to friends and everyone who has supported the development of my percussion programs, my travels and my musical growth. Keep in touch!

Dr. Kickbutt fans BEWARE!
posted February 18, 2006-

Just last night, I tracked drumset parts on a number of songs with Oshkosh's own Dr. Kickbutt. Yes- it's true- Dr. Kickbutt (and his Orchestra of Death) will soon, for the first time ever, be releasing a CD [you hoped this day would never come]! Chock full of the lovely [horrendous], sweet [at times horrifying] little ditties that his audiences have, until now [thank God], only had the opportunity [bad luck] to experience at his live performances. The recording is going great [what a mess]. I had such a blast jamming drumset on these tunes [what hell I've been through] that I'm heading back to the studio this afternoon to lay down percussion and miscellaneous noises [yah, me]! I will post more about the CD as the project progresses [run . . . get out while you still can].

Welcome to the new year and thanks for stopping by my site! Two newly released CDs to inform you about. The latest Shut Eye Records compilation, 'Buzzlighter #11,' came out right around the beginning of the month. I played on track #2, 'Vertigo,' with the band Subdivider. And just today, I got my hands on the fresh-off-the-press, self-titled debut album from Helen Exner. I split drumming duties on her disc with a great local player, Greg Thiel. Happy Holidays!
posted December 21, 2005-

Just wrapped up percussion tracks on Jeff Mitchell's soon-to-be-released album. What a refreshing project! In addition to Jeff and I, multi-instrumentalist Steve McCabe was on-board, and my favorite engineer, Justin Perkins, was turning knobs. The rhythm tracks were played on an array of interesting 'instruments,' including chains, Peruvian cajon, pails of water, 10lbs. of bird seed, tympani, cymbals scraped together, an assortment of old beat-up drums and, of course, a couple of electronic drum loops snuck in between the cracks, just for good measure! That done, it's time to enjoy the holidays!
Thanks for visiting the site. Merry Christmas!

I'll be recording later this month with Jeff Mitchell, of Decorah, Iowa. Then it will time for a little holiday R&R! I am also working on a percussion recording of my own, inspired by Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos. Surf on over to my 'Audio' page to hear a few of the ideas that I'm bouncing around. And please, let me know what you think. I would appreciate the help and criticism. Enjoy the holidays!

Three New Percussion Compositions!
posted October 21, 2005-

A quick note to let you know about three new percussion pieces now available at www.reallygoodmusic.com . . .
"Two-rific" (Int/Adv) is a piece for a solo percussionist using two different pitched snare drums.
"Los Tambores Grandes" (Int) is a work for 5 pitched bass drums. This will give your marching line students something to do outside of the marching season. Great as a feature in a concert situation.
"West of Williston" (Eas/Int) is a duet for Parade Drums with train whistle and suspended cymbal, emulating the sounds of the historic Empire Builder.
And of course, "Djammin'", "The Joke" and "Who Be You?" are available there as well.

Back from Asia
Good news and bad news
posted February 14, 2005-

The good news is, Asia was a blast- we had some great shows, saw some amazing sites and met some fantastic people. I really don't know where to begin telling about the trip, but a few highlights would be: the Great Wall, playing the Hard Rock Cafe in Beijing, duck intestines for dinner, riding elephants, tranquil meditation in mountaintop temples, and gongs, gongs, gongs!

The bad news came to us near the end of our trip, via email, informing us of the passing of our great friend and fellow musician, Matthew Golay. Myself and many other area players have spent countless nights on stage with Matt. He was most likely the busiest musician in the area; if he was not fronting his band on a particular evening, he was performing solo or duo, or hosting an open mic'. It is hard to believe that he will no longer be with us in flesh, but I do know that Matt's spirit will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, fans and all of the fellow musicians that he played
with and supported.

Here is an excerpt from "Thank You", a Matthew Golay original . . .

I got out of bed this morning
And the sun was shining bright
I stuck my head out the window and screamed
Thank you for this life
I'll take it day by day
I'll never ask for too much
I'll live my life the way I like
And I'll never give it up

Thank you for this life

Might we gain, from this tremendous loss, some of Matt's passion and thankfulness. We can learn to take nothing for granted and appreciate all that we are given. Thank you, Matt- I miss you.

Quick! . . . before the plane leaves
posted December 28, 2004-

The visas are processed, the bags are packed and we're set to go. (OK, so the bags AREN'T really packed yet. But, come on, I've got a few hours!) Bags or no bags- Asia, here we come!

A couple of things for you to watch for over the next couple of months . . .

1) I'm playing on Donna Ruzicka's recent release, 'Song of Songs.'

2) 'Just Drums II '- the double-disc percussion sampler from Fever Pitch Records has gone to press and will be out any day. I contributed one track to the compilation- 'GarbageHU'- a version of the West African piece Gahu, played on my Junk Jam toys (frying pans, pickle buckets, etc.). Watch for it at www.feverpitchfever.com

3) Originally scheduled for April, my article 'Achiagbekor for Drumset' will appear in the February issue of Percussive Notes, published by the Percussive Arts Society. Check out the PAS at www.pas.org , and if you aren't already a member- JOIN NOW! Consider it a Christmas present to yourself, or to your favorite drummer.

4) Keep your eyes peeled for Helen Exner's upcoming album, probably to be out in mid-winter. I'm playing on half of the tracks on the album. The other half are covered by Appleton's own Greg Thiel.

Alright- I'm off to China and Thailand. Happy Holidays!

BACK FROM GHANA
December 17, 2003 -

The trip to Ghana was absolutely amazing. I studied Gahu, Tokoe, Achiagbekor and Kinka pieces with the Ewe people in the Volta Region, a small amount of Kpanlogo and Fume-Fume with the Ga of the Greater Accra Region, and met a great teacher for future trips in the Northern Region (where, due to tribal issues, drumming isn't currently allowed). The people, drumming, scenery and culture were all more incredible than I could
ever have imagined. I'm working out the plans for a two-week group trip in September 2004. If you or anyone you know might be interested in going along, contact me for more details. I guarantee the adventure of a lifetime! But it's great to be back home. I can't wait to get back into my school programs and share the new drums and experiences with the students. Check back on this site- I'll be adding photos and more about the trip soon.
